Livi the Dream While Queens have Sleepless Night

The heat was turned on for Queens third last game of the season against Livingston at Palmerston Park today as the Mighty South fought out a 1-1 draw with their northerly neighbours. Needing a win to cement their position in Division 1, Queens lost a lead and looked for a spell like losing the match against a Livi side who seemed just as determined to stay in the League of Hell for another season. Prior to the game the East Stand looked busy and a 2000+ crowd in the sunshine looked on the offing. However, perhaps the beach or the Grand National drew some Queens fans away as Queens had to settle for a crowd of just under 2000.

Our Supporters Stall was reasonably busy and a couple of Trust mugs made their way to happy homes and a couple of folk renewed their memberships which will allow us to support the Junior Blues for another year. We also had copied of this months Blue & White magazine for the Junior Blues which raised a few conversations with some of our JB’s who came along the stall.

Once the game started it was obvious that Livi had not come along to make up the numbers and a series of corners threatened the Queens goal in the first 20 minutes. After that though, Queens seemed to take control and a header from O’Connor plus a snap shot from John O’Neill suggested that 3pts might be for the taking. It wasn’t a surprise when Queens took the lead just before half-time when a ball played into the Livi penalty area bounced kindly for Sean, who promptly headed over the onrushing keeper and into the net.

Half time was great with the stall busy and news streaming in that Airdrie were drawing with Ross County. If only we could stop now and go home…………………….

Having raised a few quid for the Supporters Trust and QOS at the stall, the sun continued to blaze as the second half commenced. Just as in the first half Livi pressed Queens and, although Queens had steadied the ship, it was no surprise when Stephen Craig ran on to a long ball to hammer the ball past Jamie MacDonald.

Queens then went through a particularly shaky spell, surviving a crossbar shaker as Livi homed in on 3pts. The South stuck in, rode their luck and had JT’s volleyed shot been a foot to the left Queens might have nicked the points. However, overall, as the old clich says, a draw was probably a fair result.

As far as man of the match awards, MacDonald had yet another solid performance in goals. JT also had a solid game at the back and McQuilken coordinated well with Murray down the left hand side. In midfield Adams looked out of sorts with replacement Paul Burns looking lively during his short spell on the field. Scally had the odd wayward pass but still held his own. O’Neill and Murray did ok with both getting into the box on occasion, O’Neill coming close in the first half with a superb shot. Up front Dobbie looks a shadow of the player who scored a glut of goals. In fact since Ian McCall said he was too good to play in the 1st Division he’s scored one penalty and looked like someone whi is either carrying an injury or is simply not fit. Man of the Match by a country mile though was Sean O’Connor. Scored the all important goal and covered every blade of grass in an attempt to drag his teammates forward for the winner.

The knicker elastic is well tightened now for what looks like being a rollercoaster ride to the end of the season. We now head to McDiarmid Park to meet a Saints side with still a remote chance of pipping Gr€€tna for the title while Airdrie meet a safe Partick Thistle side and County face a similarly equipped Livi. The result of Tuesdays match between the Saintees and Clyde could decide how determined a side Queens meet next Saturday. On paper, it looks like our First Division survival could depend on us beating Airdrie on the last day of the season at Palmy.

The old BP will be raised for the last push to stay in the division where, next season,  Morton will join the party, with probably Dunfermline, and my favourites to win the play offs, Raith Rovers, adding to the mix. Lets hope we are there to join in, expect more grimacing, paranoid clock watching, and the odd clenched buttock, between now and the end of the season!
