Match Review >>

After last Sunday at Palmerston I was not in the most positive frame of mind as I boarded the bus for Broadwood on a bright and sunny Saturday morning. With the midweek news that Jamie Adams was out and Eric Paton was doubtful and along with Tosh and Aitken not being 100% fit it seemed we would be well up against it for the latest clash with the Bully Wee.
But as we got of the bus at the Smiddy in at Balloch I started to feel a bit more positive. The pub laid on a fine spread for their visitors and after watching the mundane SPL match between Dundee Utd and Celtic on Setanta it was time to get back on the coach for the short drive back round to Broadwood stadium.
There was a good turnout of visiting fans as we made our way round to the turnstiles, where I was just in time to get one of the last matchday magazines which were on sale.
It was then up into the main stand where we were allocated the end section just along from the minimal and very quiet home support. Today, as in the last couple of away games I had a seat next to the Parents of our excellent young keeper Jamie MacDonald. This was a good omen as everytime I have sat with Jamies Mum & Dad he has kept a clean sheet and we have got all three points.
Queens kicked off with a familiar back four of Paton,Thomson,Lauchlan and McQuilkan in front of on loan Hearts keeper Jmie MacDonald. In midfield we had a surprise when Andy Barrowman was included alongside a not 100% fit Stevie Tosh,Neil Scally and Stevie Murray. Up front we had the reliable Dobbie and big Sean.
The official attendance was around 1200 with only 230 odd Queens fans but Im certain that was wrong as there was a far bigger turnout from Dumfries than that.
Queens started well and were looking to take the game to Clyde and had a few forward moves early on which came to nothing. The first real chance came from a Stevie Murray free kick after Dobbie had been tripped at the edge of the box but his effort was low and wide. O'Connor then had the ball in the net following good work from Dobbie but the flag was up for off-side. Then after 24 mins a free kick from Masterton rebounded of the crossbar as Clyde went close to taking the lead.
News then came through that Ross County were a goal down to Hamilton before good work from Stevie Murray saw Dobbie cut inside before firing a shot just over. Arbuckle, whom I thought was excellent last Sunday then went close for Clyde when his effort went just wide . Then after 39 minutes Jim Thomson got onto the end of an Eric Paton corner from the left but his header was well held on the line by the Clyde keeper. The whistle went for the end of the first 45 mins with Queens getting more and more into the game and having never looked really troubled at the back.So we had now went 135 mins without a goal between the sides, would that change in the second 45 minutes, time would tell !
There were no changes at the interval but Clyde nearly broke the deadlock when an effort from 35 yds was well saved by Jamie MacDonald. Higgins then headed over for Clyde before O'Connor had a half chance for Queens but his effort was held by Hutton. Then Andy Barrowman had a curling shot saved by Hutton for a corner before the deadlock was broken. Dobbie appeared to be tripped in the box and the Ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. The striker then stepped up to take the kick and give his side a one goal lead. Immediately after the goal Queens were lucky not to concede when Mastertons effort was well tipped over by MacDonald.
After 73 mins Stevie Murray went on a run and as he was bundelled down in the box it looked like penalty No 2 for Queens but this time the Ref did not give it.
Joe Miller then brought on Williams and Ferguson for Arbuckle and MacLennon as he pushed to preserve their own unbeaten run of 7 games. Clyde were not putting the Queens defence under a great deal of pressure and all they really managed was a long range shot which MacDonald safely parried away. Ian McCall then brought on John O'Neill for Stevie Murray with 7 minutes left to play but it was Clyde who came close to a leveller when a header from Fergusson was touched onto the bar by MacDonald . Clyde then went close again from a corner before Graham Weir replaced Stephen Dobbie with 5 mins remaining. Jim Lauchlan then made a block for a corner before Clyde had a shot from 25yds well over the top. The referee then blew for full time much to the delight of the travelling support who had seen a hard working display from Queens. There were some decent performances today and special mention should go to Jamie McQuilken, Andy Barrowman and the consistant as usual pair of Jim Thomson and Neil Scally but Muskys man of the match goes to our keeper Jamie MacDonald who made the saves required at the right time. Class.
Musky.
