A second home game in a row and the same result . 1-1 for the third week on a trot when we should really have had 3 wins out of 3 !
Losing late goals seems to be Queens Xmas present to Thistle, Accies and Clydebank ( sorry Airdrie !).
Ian McCall who was banished from the touchline, but could still be heard shouting from the main stand again put out a side dedicated to the 3-5-2 formation. Craig Hinchcliffe was again in goals with a back 3 of Thomson, Laughlin and Henderson and a midfield of Scally, O’Neill and Burns who replaced Warren Moon. Up front it was the uninspiring (but hard working ) pair of Weir and Barrowman….neither who could tie the laces of the legend Andy Thomson !!!
The game started in front of a crowd of around 1500 with Airdrie bringing down a decent support. It was certainly better than most of the other first divison visitors. Airdrie certainly started brightly enough and in the first 20 mins had most of the play. The first half saw Weir yellow carded for showing his feet at the Airdrie keeper before a header from Murray Henderson was tipped on to the bar by the Airdrie keeper. It was the visitors who then threatened when Hinchcliffe had to save from McDougal who was outstanding for Kenny Blacks side.. Soon after Jonjo got Queens second yellow quickly followed by the same Airdrie player going into the book for a retaliation challenge. Weir was lucky not to get a second booking when in my view he dived in the box looking for a spot kick. Paul Burns was then booked for what looked like a soft challenge as we neared half time. All in all it was a poor and uneventful first 45.
The second period started with Queens pushing forward and Eric Paton saw a shot pushed over by the Airdrie keeper. O’Connor then replaced the ineffective Weir before Queens took the lead. Pual Burns got down the line and whipped a great ball across the face of the goal and it was knocked into the net by Airdries Paul Lovering. I was now looking towards another 2-0 home win but we then started to sit deeper and deeper and Airdie started to press us back. It looked like we were going to hold on for all three points but with a minute to go disaster struck when the ball broke to ex Celtic youngster Brian Prunty and he finished well from a tight angle to send the travelling support wild. It was no more than the visitors deserved but left the home faithful devastated.
As I walked home my thoughts turned to the transfer window !! Ian, a few players need to move on and a few better quality players need to come in…..easier said than done but I am confident Mr McCall is the man who will see us secure our first division status for another year……
Stevie Tosh and Craig Brewster would be a good start !!!!!!!!!
See you all at Almondvale next week.
Musky.
