It was an early start for most Queens fans as we set out on the journey to Perth. Talk on the New Bazaar Doonhamers bus was all about the different combination of results over the last two games and what effect it would have on both the three teams at the bottom and the two at the top. We headed to the village of Abernethy for our pre match refreshments at the Crees Inn.Its a lovely pub with a good selection of real ales. After lunch and a few beers we were back on the bus for the short journey down to McDermid Park. As we neared the ground it was obvious that there was going to be a decent turnout today. The official crowd was given as 4168 with a travelling support of 403.
Queens started with Andy Barrowman and Stevie Tosh in the midfield and in the opening twenty minutes we played some nice football and never allowed the home side to get a grip on the game. We came very close to grabbing the opening goal when Dobbies shot was headed off the line. It looked like we would head in at half time level but in 40 mins Saints scored from a corner on the left when Jamie MacDonald made a rare mistake in not catching or punshing the ball clear and it fell to Andy Lawrie to head home. 1-0 to Saints at the interval. Everybody was keeping a close eye on the scoreboard at the corner of the ground to see what was happening at Gretna,Airdrie and Livingston.
The second half belonged to the home side but might have been different if the referree had given Jason Scotland a red card when he appeared to lunge a kick at Jamie Adams. It was then a bit farcical as the ref booked 5 players ! Saints were now on top and it was no surprise when they made it 2-0. This time Mensing was unmarked to head a corner kick past MacDonald. It was now just a matter of waiting on news from the other games and at this time with Airdrie and Ross County only drawing we were safe. Saints got a third when McLaren was put clean through on goal and he made no mistake. Game over. We were then anxoius for news elsewhere. The good news came through that Airdrie had failed to beat Partick so therefore could not finish above us even if we lose to them next week. It was now all about County and it was at 16.57 that the score came through on Skysports that they had only drawn at Livingston. We were safe and everbody made their way back to the buses in good spirits despite the 3-0 defeat. St.Johnstone now need to win at Hamilton next Saturday and hope that County beat Gretna up at Dingwall for them to return to the SPL.
